“At MECCA, we’re passionate supporters of local female artists and through our ongoing partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria, we’re proud to launch our Holiday 2016 campaign collaboration with Pip & Pop’s Tanya Schultz. I’ve been a fan for some time now and admire the way Tanya asserts her signature love of vibrant colour, print, and conceptual expression.”
JO HORGANMECCA Brands founder
Perth-based artist Pip & Pop (the pseudonym used by Tanya Schultz) is known for her wonderfully colourful artworks. Tanya has exhibited around the world and has worked with Hermès and Romance Was Born on unique art concepts for runway and store windows. In addition to our limited-edition holiday packaging collaboration, MECCA has commissioned Tanya to create an artwork for the NGV Collection, as well as an immersive work on display now - we can imagine how spectacular it will be. Here, we discuss our exciting collaboration with the artist…
What was your inspiration for our holiday packaging designs?
I drew inspiration from intricately patterned temari, which are beautiful Japanese handcrafted balls. Often they are given on New Year’s day and contain a specific wish or hope for a happy life.
What was the creative process like, from working through your initial concepts to final designs?
The work was a merging of my sweet, fluoro aesthetic and MECCA’s more refined palette. I created a series of works on paper with Japanese washi tape and painted paper and then digitally manipulated them. MECCA took these patterns and further explored them, manipulating colours and cropping parts to create an amazing range of packaging designs.
What did you love about working with MECCA throughout the collaboration?
I’ve loved working with the MECCA team who are so joyful and enthusiastic. They’ve been involved in the creative process the whole way, with their ideas, input and encouragement. It’s been such a pleasure and I think it’s fantastic that MECCA are great supporters of female Australian artists.
