1 INFLUENTIAL STREET STYLE BLOG. 4 CAMERAS.
10 MINUTES TO GET READY.

There’s something about street-style photographer Liz Sunshine. Make that a few things. She has an innate style radar that enables her to spot a killer look from a block away (“often I’ve had to chase someone down the street, so sneakers are definitely part of my uniform!”), a genuine ability to chat with just about anyone, and a sunny disposition that well and truly lives up to her surname. Yet when it comes to posing, she’s not so sunny. “I don’t do well with peacocking,“ she admits. “I love the idea of candid. I’ll snap someone if I think they have a great outfit but I’ll move on before they’ve finished posing.”

We’re long-time fans of Liz’s digital style portfolio Street Smith, now one of the most-referenced street-style sites in the country, and challenged her to work both sides of the camera to produce her own self-portrait series for this story. The MECCA #skinfluencer also gave us her professional take on style: on the street, in the beauty cabinet, and at home (which she shares with husband and street-art photographer Dean and their son Harry).

IN THE BEGINNING:

"[Five years ago], it was an exciting time because street style was really just beginning here and I was constantly seeing amazing girls here in Melbourne that weren’t being celebrated. I got a taste for that aesthetic and was able to take it a little bit further and define what Street Smith is about."

ON WHAT MAKES A STREET SMITH-WORTHY LOOK:

"I’m drawn to the ‘undone’ girl and a natural approach to styling that’s polished and consistent. Think: (blogger) Nadia Fairfax, (fashion icon) Christine Centenera and (ELLE editor) Justine Cullen. Also anything that catches my eye and is put together well. It could be the girl in all black or it could be a red dress, running across the road for a date. I would never shoot a girl wearing thongs. Even if everything else is amazing.

Style is ‘everything’. Beauty has to be considered; it’s doesn’t matter how much or how little at all but it’s always how it’s put together. For me, it’s top-to-toe; hair and beauty are integral."

ON MAKING TIME FOR MASKING:

"Having my own business and an energetic child means I don’t get a lot of time to myself. I will often go through very hectic periods with Street Smith, like Fashion Week and racing season and at the end of these stints masking is a great way to give back to my face."

"I can do everything within 10 minutes and know it will last me all day."

BEAUTY, ON AND OFF THE CLOCK:

"My daytime look is really natural and kept as short as possible to make sure I can fit it in before Harry wakes up. I use Mecca Cosmetica In A Good Light because I’m outdoors all the time, so it’s a really great base for me for every day. I always have a bareMinerals Lip Conditioner and Mecca Cosmetica’s Lip De-Luscious as well – so I feel like I can put it on and forget about it. Including skin, I can do everything within 10 minutes and know it will last me all day."

And after hours? "Always a red lip. Always dark mascara and fresh skin, which is usually a combination of a good primer and mineral powder. My favourites are Mecca Cosmetica Lit From Within Primer and bareMinerals Mineral Veil Powder. I also love the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette."

WHEN STREET STYLE-MEETS-STREET ART…AT HOME:

"We go through waves of chaos and calm. I wish I was a minimalist as I love space and air, but on the other hand I also love to surround myself with comfort and feelings. Our house is full of memories and pieces collected throughout our almost 10 years together. One of my favourite pieces is a Hermès silk scarf with the word 'Hermès' written in graffiti—the perfect mix of fashion and street art. And I do have a beautiful walk-in robe where everything is organised—once it’s put away! 80 per cent of my wardrobe is black and the other 20 per cent is random pieces that I love."
